What Is The HUB?
Who & What.
The HUB after school program is available to all 6th – 12th grade students living within the South Whidbey School District. The majority of teens who frequent The HUB are of middle school age. Operating in the basement of Langley United Methodist Church (LUMC), The HUB welcomes teens to drop in and enjoy a hot meal, play games, chat, do homework, play music, work on art projects, and increase their social skills. The HUB offers a drug-free zone where there is a strong ethic of respect and acceptance, supervised by two paid employees, Frankie Petitclerc, Program Manager, and Tom Stepanski, Program Assistant. Volunteers prepare the hot meal.
In the late 1980’s an after-school program was started by LUMC with the intention that it become a separate non-profit. That non-profit, the South Whidbey Youth Center, later renamed the South Whidbey Youth Connection, operated the program for 22 years.
In 2011, SWYC was dissolved, thereby eliminating the program. In late 2011, a steering committee was formed; it reopened The HUB in January of 2012 for one-day a week. In Feb., we will be open 4 days a week.
